Discussions: 1, Messages: 17, Latest: Music haiduk , Nov 7, Discussions: 59 Messages: Looking at the original map above of the Caves of Chaos now, it strikes me just how ridiculously convenient an introduction to the game's monsters it was. A bunch of well-spaced cave entrances along the walls of a rocky ravine, each housing a different family of monsters, so players could just go down the line like they're trick-or-treating, meeting a new group of baddies at every door.
In the original campaign, one door leads to a lair kobalds plus a few giant rats, the starter monster of all starter monsters.
Another area had orcs, and another had goblins. There's a cave for hobgoblins, owlbears, skeletons, and many more, providing a nice cross-section of baddies, including a big boss-type or two. There's even one chamber with a shallow pool, which taught me the important lesson that shallow pools usually conceal a some shiny bit of treasure and b some hard to spot slime monster in this case, grey ooze. In the mod, though, you can't just traipse off to any spot on the map and get your dagger dirty.
First, some quests need to be collected. As we explored the sprawling town inside the walls of the Keep, I was pleased to find a hat merchant, allowing me to outfit Greeble in a suitably pointy hat. We also visited an animal seller, where I picked out Greeble's familiar. I honestly can't recall what Greeble's familiar was originally—knowing my lack of imagination, I assume it was a black cat—but this time I picked out a box turtle. Yeah, I know it's not fearsome, but neither is a dude named Greeble.
We also came across the chambers of a priest who, if memory serves, I owe a nice big stab in the back from thirty-odd years ago. Sadly, he wasn't taking visitors, so perhaps I'll come back when we're all a few levels stronger.
And, finally, we found a notice board in the general store, listing a couple quests we could agree to perform. I multiplayed it with my son! Although quite good in some aspects, I encountered also some slight misbehavin'.
For example when you weren't on the Main character and left an area you were suddenly stuck in a virtual Limbo and couldn't go anywhere - you had to reload the saved game. The compainions were, so so I was missing some more background, but it's ok. Sometimes you are expecting some of the Companions to tell you something about the "Monsters" in the caves The Dwarf, now and then does - when you enter the Orc Caves But in general, it was a bit less than it could have been.
Furthermore, the game had taken some slight freedoms - but they were only a minor problem Mainly some of the NPC's in the Keep. It was a refreshing game, but not perfect - I give it six out of ten points, putting it slightly above average. It's worth playing, and you can actually pull your character up to fifth level if you are thourough. Agile and nice conversion of a classic, with the virtues and the flaws of the original. It took me 6h to play; reached lv5.
All worked fine for me. Our characters gained the necessary experience for 2nd level when we completed the quest for the elf brothers by talking to them in the guild house and telling them that their third brother was dead.
However, only one of the characters had the opportunity to level up, even though both had sufficient experience points. We've tried editing the character with a leveler, but so far, it resists repair. That's most likely my lack of knowledge of the game engine. Well, never mind. I and my friend finished this last night as 2-player. It's lots of fun with two players plus a couple of the potential companions. The fights are well balanced but require good tactical play to avoid being swarmed by your opponents.
No bugs as far as I'm concerned. I'd suggest you play the module with friends, the format of the module will make it much more fun that way :.
Well done and true to the module as I remember it. My only real quibble is that I can't build my own party.
I played an elvish mage, the last thing I needed was another mage. KotB is a new module - or total conversion, if you prefer - for the Atari game Temple of Elemental Evil.
It was created by modders at the Circle of Eight fansite and freely distributed. It requires the original Temple of Elemental Evil game, patched to patch 2. It does not require any other mods from Co8, such as Co8 8. KotB is for starting level players. It attempts to push many elements of the ToEE engine to their limits, using the engine's capacity for animations, quests, skills, feats and dialogue, as well as combat, to produce an adventure game in the classic puzzle-solving mode.
There is considerably more thought required to finish KotB than ToEE: though all the information is still given in the game, and it is not excessively difficult, just more thoughtful than the original game. The aim of the game is simple. The player controls one or more characters who have arrived at the Keep on the Borderlands seeking fame, fortune and adventure. The player needs only talk to the NPCs of the Keep and surrounding locales, and role-play their character, to find a variety of adventures, culminating in a journey to the infamous Caves of Chaos , where the party can fight, work for, manipulate or despoil the various tribes of monsters.
Deeper, more thoughtful quest progressions, usually with multiple ways of completing quests. And of course the new spells, new equipment and bugfixes that Co8 brought to ToEE, including more than 60 new feats. Please post feedback at www.
